What is Phase 1 Treatment and Who is it for?

Otherwise known as “early” or “interceptive” orthodontic treatment, Phase 1 treatment typically takes place during childhood (7-10 years old) and is focused on correcting BIG issues like severe crowding or spacing, severe open or deep overbites, underbites, or making room for teeth that are so crowded-out they’re trapped in the jaw.  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic consultation by age 7, when the 6-year molars are finishing erupting into the mouth.

Dr. Carbonella has extensive experience diagnosing and treating orthodontic issues during childhood and always designs treatment plans based on the question “what would I do if this were MY child?”  The goal is to get in, fix the big issues that are preventing your child from growing and developing normally, and then getting into a set of retainers for your child to sleep in until they’ve got all of their adult teeth in (typically 11-13 years old).  Phase 1 treatments ideally only take 12-18 months and cost only a fraction of what comprehensive orthodontic treatments cost.  Oftentimes your dental insurance will cover all/a portion of the Phase 1 treatment for your child.

If your child seems to be having some of the orthodontic issues mentioned above, it’s often best to treat them during childhood so we can get your child back on the track of normal growth and development.  If you have a 7-10 year old that has not yet met with an orthodontist, please take advantage of our FREE consultations!

What does Phase 1 Treatment look like?

During your child’s orthodontic consultation, we’ll discuss the various issues they have and how it would be best to solve them.  Traditionally, Phase 1 treatments were carried out with metal appliances like palatal expanders and braces, but nowadays  Invisalign is sometimes an option! Dr. Carbonella has had overwhelming success with treating a wide range of Phase 1 childhood orthodontic issues with Invisalign’s product line called “Invisalign First”.  These parents and patients have enjoyed having visits only once every 10 weeks (less time out of school), no emergency visits (braces frequently have them), and a comfortable efficient flow through treatment (braces/wires can poke the cheeks).
